Our Mission
City Country School provides an education that supports children in their self-creation, in the development of their passion for learning and in their connection to the world.
Spirit of City Country School
We want our students to experience for themselves! Our school is, and always has been, free of digital technology and full of things to do for yourself. The school is a prepared environment where children can explore their world using Montessori’s genius didactic materials, timelines, experiments, presentations, and projects, as well as through clay in the Clay Studio, cooking in the Kitchen classroom, gardening, Aikido in our Dojo, even through running a business in the Adolescent Café.
Curriculum
The Montessori curriculum is divided into three very different planes: the Children’s House (3-6), Elementary (6-12), and the Adolescent Community (12-16). All three are guided by rigorously prepared adults and feature prepared environments, concrete didactic materials, freedom of movement, choice of work, long independent work cycles, long works (projects), and both independent and collaborative work.
Responsibility
Students at City Country School have many responsibilities. In the Children’s House they learn to be responsible for themselves: for changing their own shoes, putting on their coats, changing their clothes if they get them wet or dirty, preparing their snack, setting and clearing the tables at lunch, tidying the environment. In Elementary the responsibilities increase to include organizing their outings, keeping track of their work, taking responsibility for others, cleaning their classroom, bringing their aikido gear, getting to their afternoon activities. In Adolescence the responsibilities increase to include, among other things, organizing their groups, creating the jobs charts, preparing their environment (which can include painting, building tables, tiling, creating shelving, planting trees). Since there is no support staff for cleaning, adolescents are responsible for all the cleaning.
